The only way I know to say it is, ” I am aware that I will answer to God for what he has given me.

Am I being a faithful steward?

Where is the balance between ego driven marketing of one’s “products & services” and humbly letting people know of the assignment I sense God has given to me?

I am not sure I manage this tension well. But I have been spending time with God seeking to get my motives right and to hear in a fresh way His assignment for me. HERE IS MY LATEST VERSION OF MY CALLING STATEMENT

My contribution:
I assist and encourage Christ followers, and especially ministry leaders, to live vibrantly and effectively for the long haul.

HOW do I invest in this contribution: 3 PRIMARY WAYS -

TEACHING is a grace gift entrusted by Jesus Spirit to me so I may contribute to Christ followers being transformed by his grace and truth.

COACHING is a set of skills I employ to help people get clarity and make progress in facilitating change.

WRITING is a discipline to grow me as a communicator and a means for sowing in other hearts what God has made alive and fruitful in me.

BEING A MAN WITH A LIFESTYLE OF:

TURNING to God in faith

REJOICING in my Lord in hope

and loving God and others through HONORING and GIVING

One of the places I come alive is when I am sitting with leaders over coffee or tea!

This document overviews my ministry and should answer most questions a leader or group might have if they are seeing how I might contribute

Dietrich Bonhoeffer Who Am I?

by Dietrich Bonhoeffer Dietrich Bonhöffer, a young theologian of great promise, was martyred by the Nazis for his participation in a plot against the life of Adolf Hitler. His writings have greatly influenced recent theological thought. [This article appeared in the Journal Christianity and Crisis, March 4, 1946. Used by permission. This article was prepared for Religion Online by Ted & Winnie Brock.]

Who am I? They often tell me

I stepped from my cell’s confinement

Calmly, cheerfully, firmly,

Like a squire from his country-house.

Who am I? They often tell me

I used to speak to my warders

Freely and friendly and clearly,

As though it were mine to command.

Who am I? They also tell me

I bore the days of misfortune

Equally, smilingly, proudly,

Like one accustomed to win.

Am I then really all that which other men tell of?

Or am I only what I myself know of myself?

Restless and longing and sick, like a bird in a cage,

Struggling for breath, as though hands were

compressing my throat,

Yearning for colors, for flowers, for the voices of birds,

Thirsting for words of kindness, for neighborliness,

Tossing in expectation of great events,

Powerlessly trembling for friends at an infinite distance,

Weary and empty at praying, at thinking, at making,

Faint, and ready to say farewell to it all?

Who am I? This or the other?

Am I one person today and tomorrow another?

Am I both at once? A hypocrite before others,

And before myself a contemptibly woebegone weakling?

Or is something within me still like a beaten army,

Fleeing in disorder from victory already achieved?

Who am I? They mock me, these lonely questions of mine.

Whoever I am, Thou knowest, 0 God, I am Thine!

Ministry leaders cease to be LIFE GIVING when they see people as problems rather than as God sees them.

Complaining and THANK FILLED, PRAISE SATURATED, FAITH SEEN PRAYERS do not mix together well.

Notice how these leaders describe and pray for the people entrusted to them.

Romans 16:19 ESV For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.

2 Corinthians 7:4 ESV I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy.

Philippians 1:3-7 ESV I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.

1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 ESV For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy.

Philemon 1:7 ESV For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.

REFLECT: Would it help for you to paraphrase these biblical words into your expressions of encouragement and prayer this week?

“Life Giving Leadership” is my new short summary for Biblical leadership. As I read through the Bible I see:

If leadership is INFLUENCE – surely God leads!

Ministry leaders should align with and be going in the same direction with the same priorities as God.

“For God so loved…. He GAVE… So those who believe could have life.”

“I have come that they might have life; abundant life.”

And think of the life giving images — Bread, Water, Vine, Shepherd. . .

And think of the fruit of the work of Christ — eternal LIFE!

Far to much of leadership stuff in our culture drains life….. but God’s leadership GIVES, RENEWS, and MULTIPLIES LIFE!

If people interviewed the people in your circle of influence would they describe your leadership as LIFE GIVING?

When you been touched by God’s life giving leadership what were the gifts it came wrapped in?

Eye contact,

Forgiveness,

Someone believing in and seeing potential you did not yet see,

Being invited to partner and get in the game with what had been given to you,

A safe refuge

REFLECT: HOW DO I RECEIVE LIFE FROM GOD? HOW CAN I BE GIVING THAT SAME LIFE TO THOSE I INFLUENCE?

Living the Life 1: God’s Standard For Christian Living
Living the Life 2: God’s Provision For Christian Living

Go on a eye opening journey over 6 weeks through the 10 Commandments and how they summarize in our daily life how God defines loving Him with our whole heart and loving others as our self.

In Living the Life 2 be caught up in a fresh experience of your love life with Jesus through the inside partner, the Holy Spirit.

Each week study is divided up into five daily studies. At the end of each week are questions to guide a small group discussion.

These studies are the core of the most valuable seminary course I received from Robertson in 1980. They are now filled with authentic personal illustrations, challenging questions that get all the way to our heart motives, and eye opening insight into the Bible.

A study was done of American Pastors asking them to list the top issues or problems facing the church today. Every black pastor placed racial reconciliation near the top of their list. None of the white pastors even put it on their list. When I start sharing about what God is teaching me about reconciliation my fellow white Christians sometimes say, “Why are you living in the past?” “Civil Rights was fixed in the 60s.” The majority ethnic group in America (for just a few more years) just cannot seem to enter into the shoes of an African American brother or sister in Christ and even begin to see America through their eyes.

Pastor John Piper’s new book BLOODLINES: RACE, CROSS AND THE CHRISTIAN has been the study of our Wednesday 7 AM at Bojangle’s group of 2 white guys and 2 black guys for several months. We have laughed together, “Amened” (is that a word) together, and teared up together. God is doing some special stuff in our hearts.

Ask Jesus to give you eyes to see and ears to hear and then read this book.

Last Thursday I had a time of thanksgiving and celebration over my morning coffee. I was celebrating my 175 day since I entered the ER and was then transferred on the ventilator to ICU. If you want more of the story you can scroll down a few posts on this blog and find more of the story and a sermon I preached “Whispers of the Spirit in the ICU”.
Some lessons I continue to learn from my medical journey and continuing visits with excellent doctors and therapist:
1) Celebrate the good days when you sense you are gaining strength and being productive.
2) Celebrate the not so good days when you are surprised by the stalking companions Fatigue and Loss of Balance. Celebrate the grace to stop and think, take a nap, and getting up to go again.
3) When you take a walk focus on one sense at a time for a few minutes. What can you smell right now? What can you see right now? How does it feel to grip your walking sticks, swing your arms and feel weight going on to your feet as you plant them for the next step? What can you hear? Boy — have the wood peckers been going crazy on some mostly dead trees near our home. Hope they don’t like vinyl siding! After a hard thunderstorm you can almost taste the clean air and the gardenias.
4) Closing your eyes while you exercise also helps exercise your balance systems…but be careful where you are standing.
5) Cleansing breaths between exercises help you slow down the repetition, tighten your core, and be glad no one can see beneath your t-shirt. At least I don’t have to worry about flexing my muscles and ripping the shirt… not yet anyway.
6) I was walking and talking with God about several decisions and plans I need to make and I kept hearing the Jesus Spirit whisper to me, “Roy, it is about the heart. It is ALWAYS about the heart. I am ALWAYS more concerned about restoring your heart to its design to love than the parts of the decision you tend to focus on. It is your heart…”
7) I breath IN through my nose, OUT through my mouth. (a cleansing breath) and in the words of 2 Cor 6:11-12 — Is my heart opening or closing? Open to take in his love, his grace, his joy, his peace and open to release all he gives me.
8) Hey! That is a U-haul trailer at a house empty for several months, near our house. God what gift should we bring? That looks like a child’s toy in the yard. Jesus loves the little children. Help me love in your name.
9) I love the taste of vine ripened tomatoes, fresh strawberries and the first cantaloupe of the season. Isn’t our creative God amazing!

A Prayer by Saint Patrick – He was taken from his homeland of Great Britain as a slave to Ireland. After escaping he returned to Ireland as an evangelist and church planter. Through his influence all of Ireland was touched with the Gospel. To the people who had held him in bondage he brought freedom in Christ.

I establish myself today in:
The POWER of God to guide me,
The MIGHT of God to uphold me,
The WISDOM of God to teach me,
The EYE of God to watch over me,
The EAR of God to hear me,
The WORD of God to speak to me,
The HAND of God to protect me,
The WAY of God lie before me,
The SHIELD of God to shelter me,
The HOSTS of God to defend me,
Christ WITH me,
Christ BEFORE me,
Christ BEHIND me,
Christ WITHIN me,
Christ BENEATH me,
Christ ABOVE me,
Christ at my RIGHT,
Christ at my LEFT,
Christ in BREADTH,
Christ in LENGTH,
Christ in HEIGHT,
Christ in the HEART of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the MOUTH of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the ear of every man who who hears me,
Confident in Christ.
